Company History
Safe Kids Inc. was founded in 2016 by a team of experienced law enforcement officers and educators. We recognized active shooter and violent intruder events were becoming more and more commonplace in schools nationwide. We began investigating active shooter incidents in schools and discovered survivability methods weren’t being taught for a simple reason – these methods didn’t exist. We determined this lack of education could no longer be ignored and resolved to produce a comprehensive training curriculum that could teach students to recognize, avoid, and survive active shooter and violent intruder events. As a result, our team of esteemed professionals combined the best practices of safety and education to teach active shooter prevention and response to students. It is the desire of this team that the H.E.R.O. Program will save lives through safe thinking and safe action.

Events occurring in the past twenty years have shown that active assailant incidents have become an unavoidable reality. We believe these violent events can be assuaged with the simple survivability techniques demonstrated in the H.E.R.O. Program. We are striving to spread our concept and our message to every student, teacher, and school with one goal in mind – SAVING LIVES.
Our Values
We value the sanctity of life above all else. We believe our children are our future and we must safeguard them at all costs. We value the joy of innocence and have developed our program to demonstrate active assailant prevention and survival strategies in an effective, age-appropriate manner.
Our Team
As we developed the H.E.R.O. Program, we recognized that active shooter threats were multi-faceted problems that could only be solved by combining the knowledge of several professional disciplines. Accordingly, we hand-selected a team of experts in law enforcement, education, child psychology, medicine, and law, ensuring the H.E.R.O. Program works for as many students, teachers, and parents as possible.
Directors
Adam Coughran, M.A
President
Adam has nearly two decades of law enforcement experience ranging from street level patrol, to field training officer, to instructor. Adam has completed hundreds of hours of specialized training and certifications in adult learning concepts and curriculum creation, active shooter response, weaponless defense tactics, counterterrorism, and many others. He has appeared as a safety expert on numerous media outlets including CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN; in addition to being featured in a Nancy Grace safety documentary for parents and students. Adam holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Chapman University in Political Science and Organizational Leadership. Outside of law enforcement, Adam is an educator holding instructor positions at various Southern California universities.
Sheila Coleman, M.A., Ed.D.
Director of Curriculum Development
Dr. Sheila Coleman is an experienced educator and former K-12 school principal and superintendent. Dr. Coleman holds graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University, and Educational Leadership and Administration (K-12) from University of California, Irvine. Among her many awards, Sheila has been recognized with UCI’s Distinguished Alumni Award as well as Orange County’s “Woman of the Year”. In addition to her many years of educational training and experience, Dr. Coleman is the published author of eight titles.
Scott Coleman
Vice President
Scott served for 13 years as a police officer at an internationally-accredited law enforcement agency in Southern California. He served in various assignments, including hostage negotiator, primary response officer, field training officer, trauma response officer, and detective. Scott’s creative background as a published author and expertise in safety helped define his current mission to prepare our youth to respond effectively to violence. Scott has been recognized by the United States Congress and the California State Senate for his contributions to the safety of our schools and communities.
Jason Coleman, Esq., LL.M.
Director of Legal and Political Affairs
Jason Coleman earned his Juris Doctor degree from Whitter College School of Law, graduating cum laude. Shortly thereafter, Jason was admitted to the State Bar of California. Subsequently, while serving as an extern for the United States Attorney’s Office, he obtained an additional law degree in taxation from Chapman University School of Law. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jason has volunteered as a staff attorney for the Advocacy Committee of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy and has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers every year since 2014.
