Here’s What Coachella Valley Parents Need to Know About Student Safety and Security in the New School Year

The start of the school year is just weeks away, and in light of campus shootings the past year, Coachella Valley’s school districts have spent the summer reassessing security.

The districts in the valley — Coachella Valley Unified, Desert Sands Unified, and Palm Springs Unified — have spent the past several months studying and reassessing their security policies in response to school shootings. Administrators across the valley have emphasized the importance of both preparation and prevention.

Suspicious School Behavior Should be Reported, Not Posted on Social Media

In the past few weeks, social media posts have run rampant regarding perceived safety threats at schools across the country and here locally. While most of these threats have been deemed invalid rumors, each and every perceived threat that school administrators and law enforcement officials here in PSUSD are alerted to are immediately investigated.

The problem with posting and reposting perceived threats on social media is that rumors incite fears. Rather than posting or reposting a rumor, we continue to urge our students and parents that if they see, hear or feel something suspicious, they directly report it to a school administrator or community law enforcement officer for immediate response and investigation…

Coachella Valley Community Reels in the Aftermath of Florida Shooting

Although the Coachella Valley sits thousands of miles away, Wednesday’s bloodshed at Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, has been at the forefront of conversations among local community members. The 18th case of gunfire on a school campus that resulted in the loss of 17 lives forced local students and school staff to reflect on campus safety. “I thought it was crazy,” said Ashley Lopez, a senior at Palm Desert High School. She first learned of the killings while checking the news on Snapchat. “You go to school and you don’t think something like that’s gonna happen.”

Local Schools Working to Keep Students Safe

Palm Springs, CA – The first thing you may notice while approaching a school in Palm Springs is the presence of security.  Dr. Anne Kalisek, Executive Director of Student Services at the Palm Springs Unified School District. She said an important part of their safety protocol is, “Having our security officers front and center and very visible.”

She said they also encourage school staff to build a rapport with students and earn their trust. She said students can share important information and become the first line of defense. “Our school administrators, our security officers, our teachers, really be out and about and actively supervising children and students,” Kalisek said. “So that students report, that’s the number one thing, to report when a student sees or hears something.”

She said they will soon step-up their safety training, they will begin active shooter training in their schools. “If the ground would to start shaking right now, you would go under the table,” Kalisek said. “So really the goal of the H.E.R.O. program is to teach students when to hide, escape, run, or overcome and really it’s not just an active shooter, again it could mean any intruder.”
